The Defeated Narcissist: Understanding
This happens when the narcissist realizes you have completely and utterly bested them, that they no longer have the power to confuse you with their gaslighting or scare you off with their anger. This is a stage of narcissistic behavior that is much more dangerous than the initial conflict.
A defeated narcissist is a soul-crushed narcissist. A defeated narcissist is a wounded predator. A wounded predator in the wild does not crawl away to die in peace. They become more unpredictable, more volatile, and infinitely more deadly. They do not retreat to reflect. They retreat to sharpen their claws.
It’s at this point, when they know you no longer respond to their control, that they stop attempting to own you and start trying to remove you, or worse, attempting to become you instead. It’s at this point that the covert, malignant, grandiose narcissist and traits all blend.
They can’t even bear to look at you because your presence is a living, breathing witness to their failure. You are a mirror that they cannot shatter. With every glance in your direction, they are forced to gaze into the wreckage of their false self. They are sinking in a sea of envy and shame, and with them taking you down with them into the darkness, your world too will shatter.
