Number 2: Narcissists are Hurt When You Give Admiration and Praise to Other People.
Narcissists are hurt when you give admiration and praise to other people. They feel this is an attack on their self-esteem and that it hurts them. Narcissists are not only hurt by your love and praise of other people, but are also jealous. Narcissists are always going to feel superior to everybody else, so it is like a stinging sensation when somebody else gets the limelight. They enjoy receiving compliments about how good they look, how smart they are, or how amazing their achievements are.
They don’t like it when someone else receives praise for doing something similar. For instance, complimenting your friend on how beautiful she is in her new clothes or commenting on how well she performed in her exam will anger a narcissist because she wants others to pay attention to her.
Number 3: Narcissists Are Hurt When They Are Criticized.
Narcissists are hurt when they are criticized. Criticism is the narcissist’s worst-case scenario because it wounds their ego and lets them know that they are not flawless. This leads the narcissist to anger at the critic, very likely interpreting the criticism as a personal attack on their character, not an error.
Narcissists don’t fear what you would say about them or what would happen if you don’t like them; they are so terrified that you are controlling them if you criticize them. Narcissists are hurt if they are criticized, but not because they are sensitive to what other people think.
