7. Disagree with Them.
Narcissists enjoy winning debates and arguments, and so disagreeing with a narcissist when previously you disagreed with nothing said by them can be very disorienting to a narcissist. This will inform a narcissist that you are now no longer unquestionably on the same side as them, which can be particularly disorienting if you have not otherwise provided the narcissist with such cues.
But do remember that this strategy can also infuriate the narcissist with you and confuse them as well, so you might have to use this device of confusion tactfully and strategically for that alone. This will be especially crucial when you are indeed not keen to engage a fight with a narcissist.
6. Don’t Give In to Their Demands.
When the narcissist gets angry or upset with another person, they may become very demanding as a last-ditch effort to regain control. Besides this, a narcissist may demand more if they are comfortable manipulating someone. Not giving in to their threats will not only confuse narcissists in a case such as this, but it will also prevent you from doing something you do not want to do.
Holding firm and not forgetting not to give in are two things to keep in mind when dealing with a narcissist who is acting in such a manner. And if they turn very mean-spirited, then maybe it would be best to cut all connections with them completely.
5. Ignore Them.
Ignoring the narcissist will completely baffle the narcissist and probably anger them as well. This may mean ignoring the narcissist in person and avoiding all contact with them digitally by blocking their phone number, social media, and all other digital sources of contact. A narcissist will despise this trick, but at times it is the best you can do to keep from being subjected to narcissistic abuse.
A narcissist can’t harass you with terrible phone calls if you don’t answer the phone. While many narcissists will respond quite abrasively when this distraction technique is employed, eventually most will simply give up and leave you alone and go bother someone else.
